Production Classes

Since 1947, Parkway Playhouse has been involved in providing educational and cultural opportunities in the mountains. Whether it has been in the form of providing a launching pad for early career artists to build up their resume, or lifelong learners trying something new, or for a student opening a door to personal creativity Parkway Playhouse has a long track record of being a dynamic proving ground for seventy years; the better part of a century.

This spring Parkway Playhouse’s acclaimed education program for students will offer the following classes in the performing arts.
  • For students aged 12 and up there is a class in Improv Comedy, that will provide students with a great opportunity to hone their wit, creativity, as well as comic timing.
  • A specialized class of students who are 12 and up will work with Penland affiliated artists to create the monstrous plant from space, Audrey II; the evil plant at the center of the musical Little Shop of Horrors, which will run this summer at Parkway Playhouse.  Students in the class will design and build the puppets which play a major role in this musical.
  • For students aged 11 and up who are interested in the backstage work, Parkway Playhouse Artistic Director Andrew Gall will be leading a Design and Production Workshop.  Students in this workshop will work with Gall and other members of Parkway Playhouse’s professional production staff to create scenery, props, sound and lighting effects, as well as some of the costume pieces for student performances of Winnie The Pooh KIDS and Music Man Jr.
Tuition ranges from $150 to $220 for each class.  Discounts for multiple and sibling enrollments are available.  A $50 deposit is required to register.

Parkway Playhouse Junior students will also present their first non-musical comedy; Fools by Neil Simon in May of 2016. This will be an invitation / audition only class.

Master showman Harold Hill is in town, and he's got "seventy-six trombones" in tow. Can upright, uptight Marian, the town librarian, resist his powerful allure? Based on the timeless Broadway classic, The Music Man JR. adapts this masterful musical for young performers.

The story follows fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill as he cons the people of River City, Iowa into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys' band he vows to organize. The catch? He doesn't know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian, whose belief in Harold's powers just might help him succeed in the end in spite of himself.
